Aloha!

For the last year I’ve been teaching about the importance of understanding our self-worth. I perform my musical workshop “Know Your Worth” throughout the community at schools, camps, foster homes, etc. During this experience I explain the power of speaking kind and powerful statements to yourself in a song format in order to shape the way you feel on a daily basis. On a sheet of paper, I have the audience make a complete list of all the negative statements they either say to themselves or that others have said to them. Using colorful flashcards, the audience then translate their negative statements into positive affirmations. Lastly, I create a funky beat with the audience from scratch using my violin, drum pads, guitar, and synths. Together we record a live song from scratch using the positive affirmations as lyrics! Everyone is encouraged to take home their flashcards and recite them 3 times a day in order to increase their self-esteem.

The Importance of Teaching Self-Worth

A diminished sense of self-esteem starts young and can be directly linked to mental health issues. A child suffering from a low self-esteem can quickly escalade into the following:

Clinical Depression
Anger Management Issues
Unhealthy Relationships
Eating Disorders
Addiction
Self-Harm
Suicide

The Main Causes of Poor Self-esteem Are:

Living in a toxic environment
Not being able to express oneself in a healthy manner
Trying to measure up to unrealistic expectations set by society
Pressure from the media to behave or look a certain way
Being treated poorly by others
